The woman behind 'naomba sirkali' has one more request

The Kisumu woman known for her submissive appeals to the government on TV, has one more request.

She is beseeching the government to allow her ‘sell’ her children to get money to buy land.

Jane Anyango Adika, who lives in abject poverty in the flood-prone region of Kano, has told The Nairobian that she wants to raise funds to buy land elsewhere.

Adika became a household name in May 2012 after the media widely covered her plight as a flood victim in Kano.

Later, her news video clip went viral and this statement became mostly popular among Nairobians: “…Sirikali tafadhali niko saidi mbaya kabisaa… (I am in dire need of urgent help from government)”

City mobile phone users even adopted her voice recording of ‘naomba sirkal’ as a ringtone.

Recently, the 38-year-old, told The Nairobian: “Siwezi uza bila kuomba serikali, ndio maana naomba niuze mtoto wangu moja ninunue nayo shamba (I know I cannot sell my child without the government’s permission. This is the only way I can buy land).”

She has six children who presently live with her husband Richard.

It is illegal to sell children in Kenya, but one can give them out for adoption on approval by the State.

She said she wants to go to a higher ground such as Ahero town where she will not be affected by the perennial floods in Kano.

Adika said her neighbors think she is rich because of publicity she has received since journalists first interviewed her.
