Student Sues University of Nairobi For Making her Repeat

University Of Nairobi is being sued over its decision to have a student repeat a whole year of her engineering course due to poor examination results.

Jacinta Akinyi, an engineering student says the university's mode of administering and releasing the examination results is less than transparent and not accurate.

Through her lawyer William Arusai, she says the university has failed to subject her to a fair administrative action resulting in her being asked to repeat the course.

"Every effort to verify the results have been met with total silence, opaqueness, deliberate avoidance and generally a culture of unaccountability, which does not inspire confidence in the whole process," reads her statement.

She says an urgent interrogation and resolution of the case will determine whether she will proceed to the fourth year of her studies or whether the acts or omissions by the university were regular, legal and within the law.

Justice Mumbi Ngugi directed that the dean of the school of engineering be personally served with the documents and they appear in court on November 26 for hearing.

Riots at Laikipia University

Chaos rocked Nyahururu leading to indefinite closure of Laikipia University.

The students at the institution rioted following the death of one of their student after he was run over road by an over speeding vehicle.
The student was a first year at the University.

During the protest, another student was supposedly shot dead as they blocked the road.

The incidence that saw Nyahururu police officers engage the students in running battles resulted to many sustaining injuries. One student was taken to Hospital with major wounds.

During the confrontation, a senior police officer who was at the scene was injured. The students burned the vehicle that had hit the student.

Reports from the University pointed out that the student was knocked down by a vehicle that belonged to a police officer as he crossed the road.

The Vice chancellor said that the students then took it to the roads affecting transport within Nyahururu and that is when police officers responded resulting to the death of another student.

Police officers used tear gas to disperse the annoyed students and it is at that point, one of the rioting students was shot dead. The vice chancellor indicated that they had not yet received an official report from the police concerning the incident.

Over 50 officers were deployed to the area to control the situation. The area OCPD denied reports that the second student was shot dead. He said the student died while undergoing treatment at Hospital due to injuries.

Investigations are underway to determine what resulted to his death, but the OCPD maintains that he was hit by an object and not a bullet. He requested a postmortem to be done to confirm the object that hit him.

Mr Benjamin blamed students for attacking motorists as they rioted and the move to block the road. He said that is the reason he had send his officers to cool down the riots.

“Students will be informed on the matter as soon as we are done deliberating on this issue” he said.

Kenyatta University Invaded With Rape Pests

Several female students from Kenyatta University have lately complained of being date raped within the campus.

Reports indicate that the victims have reported the issue to the University’s Peer Counseling Unit for action.

Supposedly only two hostels, Ngong hostel  and Kilimambogo hostel that are notorious for such cases.

There are claims that the attackers who commit the offences at the University could be from the neighbouring Nyayo Estates.

Dr Karanja of Kenyatta University’s health unit said that rape cases have been on the rise resulting to abortion cases, an act that is very dangerous and can cost a life.
