Musician Charles Njagua Kanyi, popularly known as Jaguar, has resigned as a board member at the National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada).
The musician cites chronic corruption at the board as the reason for his resignation.
This is barely two months after he was handed the job by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Jaguar was the surprise inclusion in the 302 officials named to the 79 state corporations.
The musician is set to hold a press briefing on Monday to explain the circumstances that have led to his resignation.
The anti-drugs agency has been marred by wrangles apitting Chairman John Mututho and a section of the board over alleged fraud involving Sh99 millions.

Safaricom Files Complaint Against Orange Over Their Provocative Ad

Telecommunications giant Safaricom has filed a complaint with the Advertising Standards Body of Kenya against Orange Kenya for their aggressive advertisements.

Orange is being accused of using Safaricom sim cards in their advertisements trying to woe subscribers from the latter. In an advertisement that has been running since January 8, Telecom has been using green simcards to depict expensive rates and their orange simcards to depict less charges. According to an advertising expert who spoke to Business Daily, that type of advertising is shrewd adding that brands should concentrate on advertising their strengths instead of their competitors weaknesses.

“In a fairly conservative culture like Kenya’s, one would rather speak more about their brands than focus on the competitor’s weaknesses,” he said.

Telecom has defended themselves saying that the advert does not target any mobile service providers. CEO Mickael Ghossein told the newspaper that the advert provides a platform for customers to choose the best rates among the service providers.

“In the advert our key message is for the consumer to make a decision by comparing our tariffs with what our rivals are charging and we not targeting Safaricom as they claim. Kenya is a multi SIM card market,” said Mr Ghossein.

Currently, the kenyan laws does not provide for such petitions and thus the decision that the board comes up with has no legal binding. However, the board has the power and influence to compel a brand to withdraw an advertisement. For instance, in 2006, the board directed that all alcohol related advertisements air past 8 pm and that’s the case even today.

Former PM Raila Odinga says rushed digital migration anti-people, urges reconsideration

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has criticized the manner in which the migration from analogue television broadcasting to digital is being done saying reason has failed to prevail. “The concerns of key media houses, the very institutions that offer broadcast services, analogue or digital, have been dismissed.

Kenyans are set to celebrate Christmas and possibly New Year in total information darkness, unaware of what is going on not only across the world but also within their own country. This is because reason failed to prevail in the saga of digital migration,” said Raila.

He accused the Jubilee Government of intending to take the country back to the era of information darkness with KBC being the only source of TV news. “It is a new low, in an emerging dangerous and worrying trend of take it or leave it that is becoming the mode of operation of the Jubilee government. The whole issue of digital migration is suspect.

There is an unexplained hurry to proceed with it even after media houses asked for more time,” he said. He termed the move as anti-people, anti-business adding that it smacks of favouritism and corruption. “The government ought to go out of its way to ensure that citizens’ access information from diverse sources at all times. The current action goes against that principle.

It goes against the Constitution. It ought to be reversed if the intention is to serve Kenyans,” he noted. He added: “At stake is not just whether the media houses suffer losses or not. It is the fact that the right to information by the people of Kenya is being disregarded at a very critical period in the history of our country.” Raila questioned the issuance of the digital distribution license to Signet, a subsidiary of the public broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) which was licensed in 2009 and the Pan-Africa Network Group (Kenya) Co. Ltd licensed in 2011. “Why only KBC and one Chinese company were cleared to distribute digital signal needs to be explained.

There is also need to appraise the country on whether these institutions have been up to speed in the task,” he said. The former Premier also termed the publicity by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) on digital migration as wanting noting that many Kenyans are not aware of what the migration is all about, why it is necessary and what they need to do. He reiterated that the Cost of the migration infrastructure and its availability especially in rural areas has not been met.

“Kenyans have not acquired the top boxes they are supposed to have in readiness for migration. The equipment is both unavailable and unaffordable. There are not many Kenyans, especially in rural areas, who will afford the monthly fees of Sh500 to be able to watch TV.

The government must be aware that millions of Kenyans across the country live from hand to mouth and cannot afford to pay for information,” he said. He pointed out that millions of Kenyans are going to be in the information darkness for a prolonged period come March 30, 2014, when migration moves to eight other towns, including Nyeri, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret and eventually to the whole country come June 2014. The High Court dismissed a petition by the three major media houses-the Standard Group, Nation Media Group and Royal Media Services to have the digital migration postponed until certain critical issues spelt out in the petition are resolved.

Following the ruling the KTN, NTV and Citizen TV have gone off-air while other avenues to resolve the issues are being pursued. “Kenyans appear to be getting punished so that a few businesses and individuals in and out of government can prosper. Information aside, thousands of Kenyans are going to lose jobs because some of the broadcast stations may have to shut down for some time while others downsize operations and staff substantially. All these scenarios are unacceptable and unnecessary,” said Raila.

SHOCKING REVELATIONS : Kenyans who died and took their ICC secrets to the grave

WHEN former Juja MP George Thuo was buried yesterday in Thika, he became the eight ICC insider to die since 2008. Like Thuo, these insiders dealt directly with the ICC in their official capacities, or they knew a lot about the post election violence in 2007/8 that left 1,400 people dead.

They took to the grave crucial information that could have helped the country to finally unravel the unanswered questions surrounding the post election violence.

Kenya has opposed an amendment proposed by the ICC on Rules of Procedure and Evidence that would allow the prosecution to introduce prior recorded testimony during trial.

The ICC Chief Prosecutor could then bring to the court prior recorded testimony of a dead person. What secrets or crucial information did they have?

George Thuo

He died a week ago after he collapsed while having drinks with friends at a club in Thika town at about 10 pm. He was a former MP for Juja and ex government chief whip. Thuo was expected to be a key witness for President Uhuru Kenyatta at the ICC.

The ICC Chief Prosecutor had claimed that Thuo had attended a meeting at Blue Post Hotel in Thika on January 27, 2008 where revenge attacks were allegedly planned for Naivasha and Nakuru.

Thuo was expected to testify that any violence was spontaneous and Uhuru did not have anything to do with the Naivasha and Nakuru killings. The former MP had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

John Michuki.

He died in February 2012 after a heart attack. Michuki was the minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration when the post election violence after the controversial swearing in of President Mwai Kibaki at State House Nairobi on December 30, 2008.

He continued serving as Internal Security minister as the country burned until January 8, 2008 when Kibaki named half a cabinet and handed Michuki the docket of Roads and Public Works.

In September 2011, during the ICC confirmation hearings of cases against Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Civil Service boss Francis Muthaura and Police Commissioner Hussein Ali, ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda told the Pre-Trial Chamber that top government officials held a meeting in early January 2008 at Michuki’s office at Harambee House to coordinate Mungiki retaliatory attacks. The pre-trial judges rejected the case against Ali while Muthaura’s was later withdrawn by the prosecutor.

George Saitoti

He died in June 2012 after a police helicopter crashed and burst into flames at Kibiku, Ngong forest. His assistant Orwa Ojode, two bodyguards and two police pilots died with him. Saitoti took over as Internal Security minister from Michuki at the height of the post election violence in January.

During the pre trial hearings, Bensouda said that government officials held a second meeting to plan retaliatory attacks in the Internal Security minister’s office in mid-January.

Saitoti also at one point simultaenously served as acting Foreign Affairs minister and was a key member of the National Security Advisory Committee.

In July 2009, Saitoti was appointed to head a special cabinet sub-committee to oversee the affairs of the ICC in the country.Another members of the bi-partisan committee was Mutula Kilonzo.

Mutula Kilonzo

Mutula was found dead in his Maanzoni home in April, 2013. At the time of his death, he was Senator for Makueni County. He was appointed as Nairobi Metropolitan Development minister when the coalition government was formed in April 2008.

He was later appointed Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister in May 2009. As Justice minister, Mutula pushed for the creation of a credible witness protection agency for high profile cases. He asked Treasury to set aside Sh1.2 billion to form the agency.

He also opposed Uhuru and William Ruto standing in the presidential elections arguing that they should first clear their names at the ICC. In June 2012, Mutula told Parliament that he had received two messages from unknown people threatening to kill him. He claimed that he was removed from the Justice ministry to Education because of his stand on ICC trials.

Bernard Kimeli (Senior deputy police commissioner)

Kimeli was murdered by unknown people in April 2011 at his house in Muguga Greens estate in Westlands. During the 2008 post election violence, Kimeli was the boss of the Kenya Police College, Kiganjo, where meetings were allegedly held to discuss how to respond to the violence.

His killers entered his house, stabbed him several times and left the well secured estate where some of Kenya’s top civil servants live. His gun was found lying by his side. Neighbours said they did not hear any commotion.

He reportedly testified to the Waki Commission that investigated the post election violence. His testimony, presented to the commission in camera, may have formed part of the evidence that ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo used to boost his case.

In May 2011, Police spokesman Erick Kiraithe stated that no evidence had been found linking Kimeli’s killing to the post election violence. However Kiraithe said that police had written to the ICC asking whether Kimeli was going to be a witness.

Kimeli was a close friend of then Deputy Commandant of the Administration Police Oku Kaunya who is now in exile and may be a prosecution witness during the ICC trials.

Joseph Maina Kang’ethe, aka Maina Diambo

He mysteriously disappeared in 2008 and is presumed dead. He was the Mungiki leader named by the ICC prosecution as having attended a meeting at State House to plan the Naivasha revenge attacks.

On July 6, 2008 Diambo and two Mungiki colleagues were reportedly called by a politician to collect Sh3 million donation for the burial of Mungiki leader Maina Njenga’s wife Virginia Nyakio.

Nyakio was killed together with her bodyguard and driver in mysterious circumstances on March 8, 2008. Their bodies were recovered in Gakoe forest in Gatundu.

The day before Diambo disappeared he had allegedly received the first donation in a briefcase from the same politician at a government office. Diambo was accompanied to the first meeting by brother Charles Ndungu Wagacha and George Njoroge Wagacha who were later murdered in Mai Mahiu. At the first meeting, they allegedly received Sh3 million to deliver to Njenga, then incarcerated at Naivasha Maximum Security Prison.

The Wagacha brothers, together with Naftaly Irungu, were shot dead as they drove to Naivasha on April 29, 2008. Another Mungiki member in Central Province, Alfred Peter Njoroge, went missing around the same time. Njoroge had earlier been arrested and charged in connection with hate leaflets distributed in Muranga town in 2007.

Kipkalya Kones and Lorna Laboso

Kones was the Roads minister and Bomet MP and Laboso was assistant Home Affairs minister and MP for Sotik when they died in a plane crash on June 10, 2008 at Kojong`a area of Nairegi-Enkare in Narok North.

They were on their way to Ainamoi constituency to campaign for ODM candidates in a by-election. The by-election was caused by the death of area MP Kimutai Too who was shot dead by a traffic police officer in Eldoret during the post-election violence.

Kones and Laboso were named in the original report ‘On the Brink of the Precipice’ by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights as key perpetrators of post election violence in the Rift Valley. They were accused of financing the Kalenjin youth who attacked the Kikuyu and Kisii in Kericho.

VIDEO - Moi Avenue Traffic Camera Flashes Endlessly As Drivers Refuse To Stop at The Red Light

In developed countries, drivers are horrified by the sight of a red light camera flashing at them. This is because there's only one thing that follows... a traffic ticket in their mail box. This can be as much as $500.

Nairobi has just seen the installation of red light cameras in the CBD. This has come hand in hand with digital traffic lights with counters.

If you thought the age old habit of jumping the red light would stop, then you're mistaken. Drivers continuing to drive even when the counter is red, at times with just a few seconds to green, is the norm not the exception.
The result is a traffic jam that is not moving. Vehicles from all directions block each other's way all the time.

This video was taken from Moi Avenue. You can see the counter is red, but no one is stopping. The traffic camera flashes endlessly, as it takes the number plates of the vehicles breaking the rules. In this 20 second clip, the camera flashes more than 10 times, translating to more than 10 rogue drivers.

As a result of the madness, the intersection at Imenti House becomes a crowded parking lot.

It remains to be seen when the rogue drivers will start receiving tickets in their mail boxes, but perhaps we'll first have to reinvigorate Posta.

British Diplomats Ejected from Eldoret Hotel for Violating Diplomatic Protocol

Three senior officials from the British High Commission were flushed out of a hotel in Eldoret where they were scheduled to hold a day-long meeting with several civil society organisations from North Rift region.

Second Secretary in Charge of Political Affairs Tom Howe, Director of Political Affairs C Sugden and another officer only identified as Nancy, were kicked out of Sirikwa Hotel in Eldoret town, the venue of the aborted meeting, after the county Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno accused them of violating diplomatic protocol.

Mr Chemno who stormed the meeting at around 11.30 am when introductions were ongoing, hit out at the officials to the consternation of participants, claiming that the county government was not informed about the forum.
“I have just come to register my displeasure to you the officials from the UK High Commission. How can you come here without having the courtesy of notifying the county government of your presence and purpose of your visit as diplomatic protocol demands. It is wrong that we are just being informed by locals,” posed Chemno.

The deputy governor told them the meeting was secretive noting that such forums should not take place at this time when the issue they were discussing at the meeting was being discussed at the International Criminal Court (ICC) with state parties.

Earlier on, a team of plain clothes police officers had camped at the hotel after local leaders raised concern over the presence of the British High Commission officials.

Some officials claimed they were on a mission to collect new evidence and recruit additional witnesses to testify against the Kenyan leaders facing crimes against humanity charges at the ICC.

There was commotion and tension in the hall where the officials and participants were set to hold the meeting forcing the organisers to kick out journalists who had come to cover the event.

Wesley Chirichir, the coordinator of Kenya Sports Foundation told the journalists to leave the venue saying their presence was not needed as the meeting was a closed door consultative forum.

“We kindly request you not to take any photos or notes as this meeting is purely closed door and therefore your presence is not welcome for now,” stressed Mr Chirchir.

Chemno accused the British government of undermining the county government and their leadership terming its action as unwarranted and vowing to notify President Uhuru Kenyatta of the matter.

The deputy governor said the whole issue was done secretively arousing suspicions among the local leadership about the British High Commission’s top officials’ tour of the county.

But reacting to Chemno’s accusations, one of the officials, Mr Howe, said that their mission should not arise any suspicion as they had come to have a peaceful forum with various civil society groups drawn from the region.

No word from governor

He said before they came to Eldoret, they had tried to contact the Governor over their mission with no success.

“We have been trying to get in touch with the Governor for the last two weeks but our efforts did not bear any fruits. We even texted him but he never replied to our inquiries,” said Tom.

Howe asked the local leadership not to harbour any suspicion over their mission in the county noting that they had come to meet with civil society organizations and elders from various communities on matters of peace and reconciliation.

Speaking to the Press later, one of the conveners of the aborted meeting Simon Kipkosgey, the coordinator of Kenya Sports Foundation and Stephen Cheboi, the chairman of the North Rift Human Rights Organisation, said they were working with the British to develop sports as a means to enhance peace and unity among local communities. “We were looking for partnership with the British government that could see our youth take part in mini Commonwealth Games as part of the wider campaign to promote peaceful co-existence among communities,” stated Chirchir.

Three perish in an accident along Kericho-Nakuru road

Three occupants of a Toyota RAV4 perished in a grisly road accident after their vehicle was involved in a head on collusion with a trailer at Kap David near Londiani, along Kericho- Nakuru road.

Kericho County Police Commander Rose Muchuma, said the vehicle was being driven towards Kericho town from Nakuru while the trailer was headed in the opposite direction when the vehicles smashed into each other in the 11AM incident.

She said the RAV4 driver and two passengers lost their lives on the spot while three children and a woman in her 20s who were among seven passengers in the vehicle were critically injured and were rushed to Kericho district hospital for treatment before being transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital , Eldoret, for further treatment.

The County police boss added that the truck driver escaped unhurt and alongside other lucky survivors in the small vehicle had since recorded a statement with the police over the events that led to the accident. “The road bend on the accident scene could be the cause of the accident but we are going to carry out further investigation to ascertain the real cause and the driver who might have caused the accident,” Muchuma said.

The bodies of the deceased were removed to Kericho district hospital mortuary while the vehicles wreckages were towed to Kericho police station. The County Police Commander appealed to motorists using the Kericho –Nakuru road to drive with caution to avoid the needless loss of lives especially as Kenyans head towards the December festive season. “We are appealing to drivers to be extra careful especially when navigating road bends.

They should slowdown at corners to avoid ramming into oncoming vehicles or veering off the road,” Muchuma said. She added that traffic police officers in the area will enforce traffic rules in order to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles ply the local roads and were being driven competently.

Miraa Industry To Begin Making Miraa Juice

Miraa and Muguka chewers in Kenya could soon completely change their lifestyle.
It will soon be possible for them to enter into a hotel and order a drink of their favourite stimulant.

Due to the closure of some of its export markets, the miraa industry has taken a huge beating, and the wastage in the local markets during the raining season is not helping much.

In an effort to diversify, the Miraa Traders Association says it is contemplating crushing and processing the plant to make a tea-like powder to widen consumer base.

"We will be unveiling the miraa tea and juice in an effort to bring on board those uncomfortable with the chewing," said Kimathi Munjuri of Sakijo International.

Sakijo International-which markets miraa locally and internationaly- said changing the perception on miraa and expanding products made from the plant will make it be allowed for clean and decent consumption like any other stimulants in all levels of outlets in Kenya.

"When achieved this will translate to about $100,000 (Sh8.6 million) more daily in sales for the industry and eliminate any wastage completely. We will not even have any to export," Munjuri said.

Kenyan Couple in the US in Critical Condition After Suspected Suicide Attempt

A Kenyan couple is admitted in a US hospital following what the police are calling a “suspected case of attempted murder suicide.” Police spokesperson Lisa Holland says that officers were called into an apartment complex in the City of Roswell, Georgia on Monday morning after a woman, Emily Mokua, was seriously wounded in the chest following a scuffle with her husband.

“A neighbour called 911 after a 16-year-old boy ran into their house saying there was a problem at his apartment,” said Holland. When officers arrived, they found the boy’s mother bleeding profusely from a stab wound on the chest while his father, Obadiah Mokua, lay on the floor unconscious. “They didn’t look too good,” she said. By the time of filing this story, the woman was undergoing surgery at North Fulton Hospital while the man was being treated for poison ingestion. A spokesperson at Fulton North hospital told a media briefing Monday evening that the woman was in a “critical but stable condition.”

He, however, did not divulge any information on whether Mr Mokua’s condition had improved. At the time of the incident, there were three children in the house, ages 16, 6 and 3. They were taken by police to a shelter for abandoned children after the incident. “They are at the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS),” said Euphemia Gitau, a sister to Obadiah Mokua. Ms Gitau told the Nation that the family was shocked by the incident. “We didn’t see this coming. There were no signs of an impending fight,” she said.

Police said they are carrying out further investigation on the incident. “They have cordoned off the crime scene and would not let us into the apartment, said Mr George Gitau, a brother-in-law to Mr Mokua. The incident comes barely three months after the body of a Kenyan man was found hanging from a tree at Lafayette Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Police ruled out foul play saying the 61 year old Jeffrey Kilibwa, committed suicide.

Don't Appoint Mututho, Says Parliamentary Committee

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Administration has rejected the appointment of former Naivasha MP John Mututho as NACADA chairman.

The committee observed that Mututho has two pending court cases and needs to clear his name.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had appointed Mututho to the position but later revoked the appointment to pave way for his vetting as indicated via a Kenya Gazette notice dated October 24th.

The committee chaired by Tiaty MP Asman Kamama vetted Mututho on Monday and tabled its report on Tuesday afternoon to await debate.

The former MP had served the office for one month after replacing Dr Frank Njenga.

This comes two days after Mututho ordered the closure of a bar that was operating during the day in Kagio, Kirinyaga County.

The gazette gave no reasons for the revocation, but Mututho has been quoted saying he resigned voluntarily in order to be vetted by Parliament.

Hilarious Origin of Names of Towns and Locations in Kenya

Kenya is home to many trading centers and towns some with very interesting names, but have you ever thought of how the name of your town or village came about? Some of the names came about by what we can term as sheer coincidence and twists which are funny.

Dagoretti Corner: The place was originally known as “The Great Corner” and the Africans could not pronounce it correctly and the corrupted version became Dagoretti Corner which was directly from The Great Corner which has stuck to this day. The Great Corner was the site of the first airfield in Kenya; a patchy grass runway around the present Meteorological Department.

Rumuruti: Rumuruti is a town in Laikipia County about 40km north of Nyahururu. How did it get its’ name? The town was on the route from Nyahururu to Mararal which was commonly used by white settlers. They referred to the trail between the two settlements as a “Remote route”. The corrupted version of this then became Rumuruti, the town name as we know it today. Rumuruti was the site of a huge meteor shower in 1934 and some of them are on sale on e-bay/

Thogoto: The Church of Scotland Mission was the first mission to settle in the now little town near Kikuyu in Kiambu County. The local Kikuyu Community could not pronounce the name Scotland easily and they would pronounce it as “Thigoto” and thus the name Thogoto was born. Today the town has maintained the name Thogoto and that PCEA Church of the Torch one of the oldest mission churches still stands.

Kapropita: This is a town in the former Rift Valley in Baringo County. A settler known as Corporal Peter lived in the area during the pre-independence period. His name was a tough one for the locals to pronounce and the area soon was referred as Kapropita which is a corrupted version of Corporal Peter.

Kabarnet: It’s believed that the town is named after a French man known as Barnet who settled in the area and made it his home. The local Tugen people then started to refer to the place as Ka- Barnet. The word “Ka” means “the homestead of” and therefore the name Ka-Barnet means the place/home of Barnet.

Rod-Kopany: Is a busy town in Homa-Bay County. During the construction of a road in the area the Mehta Singh Road Company the residents would refer to it as Rodi Kopany. This name quickly stuck and the town was known as Rod-Kopany which is a corruption of the name Road Company.

Kirigiti: There was a popular cricket field in Kiambu and it was popular with settlers who would frequent the place from surrounding farms. The local Kikuyu community could not pronounce the name Cricket and they pronounced it as Kirigiti. Today the stadium is referred to as Kirigiti which is just a version of Cricket but with a Kikuyu corruption to it. Mzee Jomo Kenyatta held his last rally at Kirigiti stadium before the declaration of emergency in 1952.

Roysambu: Roysambu is a suburb along the Thika superhighway in Nairobi City County. The place was known as “Royal Suburbs” during the colonial times. However the Africans in Nairobi pronounced it as Roy-Sabu and thus it got the name “Roysambu”.

Kariakor: During the First World War a contingent of Africans were in the British army as carrying luggage. The Carrier Corps, as they were known, carried everything the soldiers needed to survive during the East African Campaign of the First World War. Their base in Nairobi was around the present day Kariakor area. The locals simply called the place Carrier corps which with a local dialect influence sounded like “Kariako” and it’s today still called by that name.

Tenwek: Is a shopping centre located in Bomet County and location of one of the oldest hospitals in the region which was built in 1936. The name Tenwek is believed to have come about because it took ten weeks to travel from the Mombasa to the area by foot.

Matayos: In the county of Busia there is a trading called Matayos. According to the residents of Busia a European by the name Mathew moved to the area during the colonial times. The residents referred to him as “Mathayo” which is the Kiswahili version of Mathew. However, in Luhya dialect the name was pronounced as “Matayo”. Today Matayos is one of the new constituencies in Busia.

While many of these were English names corrupted into local dialects, there are a number of places in Kenya where local names were Anglicized by the European settlers.

Msongari: The name was Muthangari and an area in Lavington still maintains that name. The name was a bit tuff for the settlers and they pronounced it as “Msongari”.

Now that is Kenyan history in a bit.
