Knec warns against exam cheating as KCPE kicks-off

The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has sent a warning to exam supervisors and school heads regarding exam irregularities that have marred national examinations in the past.

Knec Chief Executive Paul Wasanga cautioned school heads and exam supervisors that legal action against them will be taken if it is proved that they have participated in the vice.

“When teachers charged with the responsibility of mentoring our children condone cheating, we should all get concerned. This must stop,” said Wasanga.

Wasanga made the remarks ahead of the start of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations this morning.

This year, the number of candidates sitting for the national exams is just 200,000 shy of reaching the one million mark since the inception of free primary education in 2003.

A total of 844,530 candidates, including 906 candidates from Nuba Mountains in Sudan, will sit the exams.

Examination materials

The dispatch of examination materials began last Friday and by Sunday, all exams-related materials were delivered and stored in respective police stations.

The exams will be stored in 1,026 distribution centres across the country and taken in 23,819 examination centres compared to 22,783 examination centres used last year.

The exams boss said Knec had engaged 132,187 contracted professionals to manage field administration, 24,182 supervisors, 52,730 invigilators, 48,200 security personnel and 7,075 examiners.

So far, 4,627 examiners have applied online to mark this year’s KCPE exam papers and been sent invitation letters.

For the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, 8,546 examiners applied and received invitation letters to mark the 2013 KCSE exam scripts.
