After the crash that happened at Mutindwa between a train and a matatu, someone has to be
answerable, according to the Nairobi Senator, Mike Sonko. He plans on pressing legal charges against some government officers for ‘sleeping on the job’.
Sonko claims that the crash could have been avoided if the government agencies had observed the law when the construction of the Buruburu-Umoja road was taking place.
The senator said that officers from the Nairobi Metropolitan ministry, the transport ministry and Kenya Railways need to be held accountable for the crash that resulted to the death of 11 people and injured several for failing to set up safety measures.
A contractor (SS Mehta) involved in the construction of the road also faces being sued by the senator for not including bumps as they were constructing the 5kilometres road.
“Transport ministry officers, the resident engineer, Nairobi Metropolitan officers, Kenya Railways and the contractor all played a role in neglecting to put in place road barriers that finally led to the ill-fated deaths,” said Sonko.
Sonko noted that Kenya Railways has put in place barriers in other places with railway lines. They routinely close the road allowing the train to pass with ease, a different case with the Mutindwa area.
In a statement, Sonko seeks answers to why contractors were paid by the government despite no following the law in the construction of the road.
Sonko said that he is in support of the charges that the ummoiner driver faced and also the government’s action to demolish all structures near the railway line, but other officers within the government need to be held accountable for their negligence.
