Former PM Raila Odinga says rushed digital migration anti-people, urges reconsideration

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has criticized the manner in which the migration from analogue television broadcasting to digital is being done saying reason has failed to prevail. “The concerns of key media houses, the very institutions that offer broadcast services, analogue or digital, have been dismissed.

Kenyans are set to celebrate Christmas and possibly New Year in total information darkness, unaware of what is going on not only across the world but also within their own country. This is because reason failed to prevail in the saga of digital migration,” said Raila.

He accused the Jubilee Government of intending to take the country back to the era of information darkness with KBC being the only source of TV news. “It is a new low, in an emerging dangerous and worrying trend of take it or leave it that is becoming the mode of operation of the Jubilee government. The whole issue of digital migration is suspect.

There is an unexplained hurry to proceed with it even after media houses asked for more time,” he said. He termed the move as anti-people, anti-business adding that it smacks of favouritism and corruption. “The government ought to go out of its way to ensure that citizens’ access information from diverse sources at all times. The current action goes against that principle.

It goes against the Constitution. It ought to be reversed if the intention is to serve Kenyans,” he noted. He added: “At stake is not just whether the media houses suffer losses or not. It is the fact that the right to information by the people of Kenya is being disregarded at a very critical period in the history of our country.” Raila questioned the issuance of the digital distribution license to Signet, a subsidiary of the public broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) which was licensed in 2009 and the Pan-Africa Network Group (Kenya) Co. Ltd licensed in 2011. “Why only KBC and one Chinese company were cleared to distribute digital signal needs to be explained.

There is also need to appraise the country on whether these institutions have been up to speed in the task,” he said. The former Premier also termed the publicity by the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) on digital migration as wanting noting that many Kenyans are not aware of what the migration is all about, why it is necessary and what they need to do. He reiterated that the Cost of the migration infrastructure and its availability especially in rural areas has not been met.

“Kenyans have not acquired the top boxes they are supposed to have in readiness for migration. The equipment is both unavailable and unaffordable. There are not many Kenyans, especially in rural areas, who will afford the monthly fees of Sh500 to be able to watch TV.

The government must be aware that millions of Kenyans across the country live from hand to mouth and cannot afford to pay for information,” he said. He pointed out that millions of Kenyans are going to be in the information darkness for a prolonged period come March 30, 2014, when migration moves to eight other towns, including Nyeri, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret and eventually to the whole country come June 2014. The High Court dismissed a petition by the three major media houses-the Standard Group, Nation Media Group and Royal Media Services to have the digital migration postponed until certain critical issues spelt out in the petition are resolved.

Following the ruling the KTN, NTV and Citizen TV have gone off-air while other avenues to resolve the issues are being pursued. “Kenyans appear to be getting punished so that a few businesses and individuals in and out of government can prosper. Information aside, thousands of Kenyans are going to lose jobs because some of the broadcast stations may have to shut down for some time while others downsize operations and staff substantially. All these scenarios are unacceptable and unnecessary,” said Raila.

Lady Working At A Biscuits Making Factory Crushed To Death By Machine In Thika

A 25 year old female employee of a biscuit manufacturing company in Thika town was on Wednesday crashed to death by a machine she was operating.

Teresia Nduku Kanini was cleaning the giant machine at a Biscuit manufacturing company when the turbines whisked her and crashed her to death.

Attempts by her colleagues to disengage the machines were futile and they watched helplessly as she was crushed to death by the giant wheels in the incident that happened at around midnight.

Colleagues who sought anonymity for fear of being victimized by the management alleged that the management of Mjengo Limited company usually locks up over 200 night shift workers in the factory to package and load biscuits without any technical person to attend to the machines.
They further alleged that all the main doors are locked from outside making it impossible for the workers to seek external help in case of an emergency.

They said that it took a while for the management to respond to their cry for help when the unfortunate incident happened and by the time the director Raj Malde arrived accompanied by police officers the lady had already died.

Area OCPD Paul Letting confirmed the incident and said that they were liaising with the occupational Health and Safety Officers to verify what caused the unfortunate incident.
The management which mainly comprises Asians and Whitemen at some point threatened to take legal action against the media for using backdoors to access their organization.

It took the intervention of the Company Director Raj Malde who was called from his residence to calm the tempers of the members of the fourth estate. He took the pressmen through the CCTV footage which indicated the movement of the deceased until she met her death.

The footage depicted the young lady getting into a prohibited area to pick some gunny bag when she was whisked by the giant machine which crashed her to death.

The management of the Biscuit manufacturers has agreed to assist in funeral arrangements of the unfortunate worker and will also compensate her family for the untimely loss.

Kenyans Attack Robert Alai After He Abused Eric Wainaina on Twitter

On Sunday during Tusker Project Fame's probation night, controversial blogger Robert Alai happened to pick on the academy principal Eric Wainaina.
In his characteristic self, the blogger made a harsh comment about the singer - a decision he's probably regretting.
"A close-up shot of Eric Wainaina makes him look like a fat mboch on TV. #TPF6" that was his tweet.

It appears that Eric got wind of it yesterday, and gave Alai the perfect reply.

Thanks @RobertAlai you're always so encouraging. I've always wanted to look like a fat domestic worker

That motivated other Kenyans on Twitter to speak out on how they really feel about Alai. The tweets were many and vicious. Here are a few.

SHOCKING REVELATIONS : Kenyans who died and took their ICC secrets to the grave

WHEN former Juja MP George Thuo was buried yesterday in Thika, he became the eight ICC insider to die since 2008. Like Thuo, these insiders dealt directly with the ICC in their official capacities, or they knew a lot about the post election violence in 2007/8 that left 1,400 people dead.

They took to the grave crucial information that could have helped the country to finally unravel the unanswered questions surrounding the post election violence.

Kenya has opposed an amendment proposed by the ICC on Rules of Procedure and Evidence that would allow the prosecution to introduce prior recorded testimony during trial.

The ICC Chief Prosecutor could then bring to the court prior recorded testimony of a dead person. What secrets or crucial information did they have?

George Thuo

He died a week ago after he collapsed while having drinks with friends at a club in Thika town at about 10 pm. He was a former MP for Juja and ex government chief whip. Thuo was expected to be a key witness for President Uhuru Kenyatta at the ICC.

The ICC Chief Prosecutor had claimed that Thuo had attended a meeting at Blue Post Hotel in Thika on January 27, 2008 where revenge attacks were allegedly planned for Naivasha and Nakuru.

Thuo was expected to testify that any violence was spontaneous and Uhuru did not have anything to do with the Naivasha and Nakuru killings. The former MP had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

John Michuki.

He died in February 2012 after a heart attack. Michuki was the minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration when the post election violence after the controversial swearing in of President Mwai Kibaki at State House Nairobi on December 30, 2008.

He continued serving as Internal Security minister as the country burned until January 8, 2008 when Kibaki named half a cabinet and handed Michuki the docket of Roads and Public Works.

In September 2011, during the ICC confirmation hearings of cases against Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, Civil Service boss Francis Muthaura and Police Commissioner Hussein Ali, ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda told the Pre-Trial Chamber that top government officials held a meeting in early January 2008 at Michuki’s office at Harambee House to coordinate Mungiki retaliatory attacks. The pre-trial judges rejected the case against Ali while Muthaura’s was later withdrawn by the prosecutor.

George Saitoti

He died in June 2012 after a police helicopter crashed and burst into flames at Kibiku, Ngong forest. His assistant Orwa Ojode, two bodyguards and two police pilots died with him. Saitoti took over as Internal Security minister from Michuki at the height of the post election violence in January.

During the pre trial hearings, Bensouda said that government officials held a second meeting to plan retaliatory attacks in the Internal Security minister’s office in mid-January.

Saitoti also at one point simultaenously served as acting Foreign Affairs minister and was a key member of the National Security Advisory Committee.

In July 2009, Saitoti was appointed to head a special cabinet sub-committee to oversee the affairs of the ICC in the country.Another members of the bi-partisan committee was Mutula Kilonzo.

Mutula Kilonzo

Mutula was found dead in his Maanzoni home in April, 2013. At the time of his death, he was Senator for Makueni County. He was appointed as Nairobi Metropolitan Development minister when the coalition government was formed in April 2008.

He was later appointed Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister in May 2009. As Justice minister, Mutula pushed for the creation of a credible witness protection agency for high profile cases. He asked Treasury to set aside Sh1.2 billion to form the agency.

He also opposed Uhuru and William Ruto standing in the presidential elections arguing that they should first clear their names at the ICC. In June 2012, Mutula told Parliament that he had received two messages from unknown people threatening to kill him. He claimed that he was removed from the Justice ministry to Education because of his stand on ICC trials.

Bernard Kimeli (Senior deputy police commissioner)

Kimeli was murdered by unknown people in April 2011 at his house in Muguga Greens estate in Westlands. During the 2008 post election violence, Kimeli was the boss of the Kenya Police College, Kiganjo, where meetings were allegedly held to discuss how to respond to the violence.

His killers entered his house, stabbed him several times and left the well secured estate where some of Kenya’s top civil servants live. His gun was found lying by his side. Neighbours said they did not hear any commotion.

He reportedly testified to the Waki Commission that investigated the post election violence. His testimony, presented to the commission in camera, may have formed part of the evidence that ICC chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo used to boost his case.

In May 2011, Police spokesman Erick Kiraithe stated that no evidence had been found linking Kimeli’s killing to the post election violence. However Kiraithe said that police had written to the ICC asking whether Kimeli was going to be a witness.

Kimeli was a close friend of then Deputy Commandant of the Administration Police Oku Kaunya who is now in exile and may be a prosecution witness during the ICC trials.

Joseph Maina Kang’ethe, aka Maina Diambo

He mysteriously disappeared in 2008 and is presumed dead. He was the Mungiki leader named by the ICC prosecution as having attended a meeting at State House to plan the Naivasha revenge attacks.

On July 6, 2008 Diambo and two Mungiki colleagues were reportedly called by a politician to collect Sh3 million donation for the burial of Mungiki leader Maina Njenga’s wife Virginia Nyakio.

Nyakio was killed together with her bodyguard and driver in mysterious circumstances on March 8, 2008. Their bodies were recovered in Gakoe forest in Gatundu.

The day before Diambo disappeared he had allegedly received the first donation in a briefcase from the same politician at a government office. Diambo was accompanied to the first meeting by brother Charles Ndungu Wagacha and George Njoroge Wagacha who were later murdered in Mai Mahiu. At the first meeting, they allegedly received Sh3 million to deliver to Njenga, then incarcerated at Naivasha Maximum Security Prison.

The Wagacha brothers, together with Naftaly Irungu, were shot dead as they drove to Naivasha on April 29, 2008. Another Mungiki member in Central Province, Alfred Peter Njoroge, went missing around the same time. Njoroge had earlier been arrested and charged in connection with hate leaflets distributed in Muranga town in 2007.

Kipkalya Kones and Lorna Laboso

Kones was the Roads minister and Bomet MP and Laboso was assistant Home Affairs minister and MP for Sotik when they died in a plane crash on June 10, 2008 at Kojong`a area of Nairegi-Enkare in Narok North.

They were on their way to Ainamoi constituency to campaign for ODM candidates in a by-election. The by-election was caused by the death of area MP Kimutai Too who was shot dead by a traffic police officer in Eldoret during the post-election violence.

Kones and Laboso were named in the original report ‘On the Brink of the Precipice’ by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights as key perpetrators of post election violence in the Rift Valley. They were accused of financing the Kalenjin youth who attacked the Kikuyu and Kisii in Kericho.

VIDEO - Moi Avenue Traffic Camera Flashes Endlessly As Drivers Refuse To Stop at The Red Light

In developed countries, drivers are horrified by the sight of a red light camera flashing at them. This is because there's only one thing that follows... a traffic ticket in their mail box. This can be as much as $500.

Nairobi has just seen the installation of red light cameras in the CBD. This has come hand in hand with digital traffic lights with counters.

If you thought the age old habit of jumping the red light would stop, then you're mistaken. Drivers continuing to drive even when the counter is red, at times with just a few seconds to green, is the norm not the exception.
The result is a traffic jam that is not moving. Vehicles from all directions block each other's way all the time.

This video was taken from Moi Avenue. You can see the counter is red, but no one is stopping. The traffic camera flashes endlessly, as it takes the number plates of the vehicles breaking the rules. In this 20 second clip, the camera flashes more than 10 times, translating to more than 10 rogue drivers.

As a result of the madness, the intersection at Imenti House becomes a crowded parking lot.

It remains to be seen when the rogue drivers will start receiving tickets in their mail boxes, but perhaps we'll first have to reinvigorate Posta.

REVEALED - A Drone Was Used To Take The Aerial Photos of Machakos Stadium (PHOTOS)

You must have seen those aerial photos of Machakos' Kenyatta Stadium. Governor Alfred Mutua share the pics on his social media pages, and some people might have asked why spend a lot of money to hire a chopper just to get some pictures.

Today we can reveal that the photos were not taken from a helicopter, but a drone. During the official opening of the stadium on Saturday, the same drone was seen flying over the stadium, probably looking for the best shots.
It is not clear who was operating it, and whether Machakos County government owns it.

Civilian drones are surprisingly very cheap. For only Sh 15,000, you can buy a H-King Darkwing, capable of flying for about 10 minutes without recharge. For Sh 25,000, you can get a Parrot AR, capable of flying for 20 minutes non stop.
For about Sh100,000 you have a Turbo Ace X830-D, with a flight time of upto 30 minutes.

The one used in Machakos appears to be a DJI Phantom GPS Drone. It can fly for a little over 15 minutes before recharge. It has a flying range of about 300 metres.

The best part however is that it has an autopilot system. You can send it out and it will come back and land at the same spot using GPS coordinates, without you controlling it.
